Grace, Courtesy and Gratitude
November 20, 2023Do you want to raise mentally strong children? If yes, avoid giving your children unnecessary help. In the Built Different Podcast, Dr. Daniel Amen, Neuropsychiatrist, shares a powerful message from a book he co-authored with Dr. Charles Fay, Child Psychologist, called Raising Mentally Strong Kids. “In a time when so many children and young adults seem to be struggling, parents are looking for help in bringing up mentally healthy kids who are equipped to thrive“.
In this groundbreaking book, where neuroscience meets love and logic, parents discover practical tools to guide children of all ages through challenges like defiance, meltdowns, and power struggles.
Dr. Amen highlights how overparenting can inadvertently undermine a child’s self-esteem. By constantly intervening and solving problems for our children, we are inadvertently boosting our own sense of importance while hindering their development of self-reliance. Children can develop mental toughness and a strong sense of responsibility when they learn to navigate challenges independently. For example, if a child forgets their homework or jacket, allowing them to experience the natural consequences can be a valuable learning experience. Instead of immediately jumping to solve their problems, such as when a child says “I’m bored”, we should encourage them to find their own solutions. By asking them “What are you going to do about it?”, we empower them to think critically and develop problem-solving skills.
By following the authors’ guidance, children can develop into:
- Telling their brain what they want
- Responsible and resilient individuals
- Confident decision-makers
- Focused and motivated learners
- Individuals with strong and healthy relationships
Dr. Amen and Dr. Fay empower parents to become the best versions of themselves and nurture children to reach their full potential, including optimal mental and emotional well-being.
