For Children Aged 3-6 Years
At La Jolla Montessori School's Primary, Transitional Kindergarten (TK) and Kindergarten programs, Dr. Maria Montessori’s proven educational method meets bilingual immersion. Designed for children ages 3 to 6, this multi-age environment allows children to progress naturally through language, mathematics, practical life, sensory exploration, and cultural studies at their own individual pace.
As your child grows, so do our programs—immersing children in behaviors and lessons that foster self-motivated, successful learners.
Key Highlights of Our Primary Program
- Bilingual English & Spanish Immersion: Building on early language skills, our dual-language environment allows children to absorb Spanish naturally. Using tactile Montessori materials—such as Sandpaper Letters in both English and Spanish—students connect sounds, sight, and touch, smoothly transitioning into bilingual writing, reading, and fluent self-expression.
- Multi-Age Mentorship & Peer Learning: In our mixed-age classrooms, Guides create a natural community dynamic by pairing a younger child with an older child to support understanding and assimilation. Three-year-old children observe, absorb and learn from older peers, while five-and six-year-olds step into leadership roles as Year Three classroom leaders. Sharing concepts with younger peers reinforces mastery, deepens self-confidence, and nurtures social empathy.
- Self-Directed Academic Mastery: Children choose their work from a carefully prepared classroom environment with child-sized shelves. Under the quiet guidance of certified Montessori educators, children cultivate deep focus, intrinsic motivation, time-management skills, and critical problem-solving habits that serve them far beyond Kindergarten.
- Parent-School Partnership: We support children by actively collaborating with parents to bridge classroom learning with home life. Through consistent communication and practical strategies, we help families nurture independence, self-care, and executive function skills to apply the same lessons learned in school at home. As a result of this participatory experience, children learn to do things independently both at school and at home.
A Lifelong Base of Skills
Throughout the English/Spanish bilingual immersion program, we aim to build foreign language fluency by the end of Kindergarten. But, they’ll also carry with them a wide-ranging set of skills, including respecting self, others, the world around them, and a base of conceptual knowledge based on their individual strengths.
“Joy, feeling one’s own value, being appreciated and loved by others, feeling useful and capable of production are all factors of enormous value for the human soul.” -Maria Montessori
